Guess I could celebrate But it’s gone yeah it’s gone They say it’s never too late Now another wave is coming on Record store man, make me feel like I truly belong Songs are like the secret key that unlocks me all along Truer than friends By my side whatever All I see is years go by without a trace Let it slide on me at last No keeping track of numbers Though it’s hard to think that I have ever really been there Kids are scary cause they don’t know about truth and what’s beyond I trust myself like I trust no one, I can wait but not for long Guess I could celebrate But it’s gone yeah it’s gone They say it’s never too late Now another wave is coming on Truer than friends By my side whatever All I see is years go by without a trace Let it slide on me at last No keeping track of numbers Though it’s hard to think that I have ever really been there Play Again For sadness Truer than friends By my side whatever All I see is years go by without a trace Let it slide on me at last No keeping track of numbers Though it’s hard to think that I have ever really been there Play Again For sadness

The day something good happens Won’t be cause of you You’re always at a crossroads No one telling you what to do I keep hoping and I ain’t stopping anytime soon I know people are hopeless Especially if you think it’s true Vent it out I don’t know what you got You blurt out the truth From a tantalizing youth By the time we get started nothing will be new Starting over and over, never realizing it’s the same old tune I keep hoping and I ain’t stopping anytime soon People will always seem hopeless Especially if you think it’s true Vent it out I don’t know what you got You blurt out the truth From a tantalizing youth A million voices are yelling at you I can’t hear a thing And sitting on my couch I’m always quite sure I can see everything A million voices are yelling at you I can’t hear a thing And sitting on my couch I’m always quite sure I can see everything Vent it out I don’t know what you got You blurt out the truth From a tantalizing youth

Could we lift this curse? Knock out the spiraling down It’s been so long No hope is wrong Can we make this worse? There is always room enough for more More aggravation More twisted thinking Paving the way A month that feels like a year Piling up crises like pancakes Going under After fiasco I’ll give you aggravation It’s all along the way Failure will show you the way And we look for traces of light They won’t give up without a fight No one knew, no We’re owing so much more I’ve got a wire in my soul Runs to all I’ve known before All these inside wars They won’t ever show

Strip 03:52
See this plain, so wide It’s just empty all around I don’t have no team, and never have It’s just one word I don’t understand Strip it bare All that’s left is this Though we once said We would How crazy this was To hope that There’s an us Just so improbable, I know that With all the time in the world, still waiting Strip it bare All that’s left is this Though we once said We would All these words that I wanted to hear Discarded All left out

I can see the tip of the iceberg In the distant past Like the shadow of survival No matter how hard these facts hit Stay at it Time is an ally if you’ve got it This slab is shrinking but we cling to it Your arm grows weak but somehow Fools keep at it This slab is shrinking but we cling to it Just a little more that we can stretch out longer And if you can breathe, you deserve it Time to put in the work Not sure what can still be affordable And if you’re looking to feed your kids Line right up All that’s left by now is scarcity Did you bet on death? We got a winner It takes a fool to regret And this race of fools we’ll win it just yet It’s a sad credit Always found that it was a big world Yeah we know there’s always still time Our mistakes can drown in the ocean Till the day they bite back hard And it takes someone to wonder Has this gone far enough? Are you witness or accessory? Well if you’re looking to feed your kids Please line up All that’s left by now is scarcity Innocent No matter now And who would? Oh I don’t know Oh I don’t know This slab is shrinking but we cling to it Your arm grows weak but somehow Fools keep at it This slab is shrinking but we cling to it Just a little more that we can stretch out longer Did you bet on death? We got a winner It takes a fool to regret And this race of fools we’ll win it just yet It’s a sad credit Always found that it was a big world Yeah we know there’s always still time Our mistakes can drown in the ocean Till the day they bite back hard

I got a feeling Someone will get hurt There’s fairness in the system If you can only make it work See it’s like this I want to see you try I want to see you settle I want to see these strings cut And the curtain tumble down If you want to know A word, sir If we dare to trouble you We’re dying out here Can you help us out It’s not a matter of trying How much can your head hurt? Think now and overturn later A crack is all you need to start it all Dig in your fingers and push What are the chances? Keep staring at the floor It’s there for you Tired of rants Your hand is on the door Opening Walk into the light A word, sir… What are the chances?… Waiting for an answer Waiting on the world It’s only what you heard It’s only what You’re waiting for an answer You’re waiting on the world But it’s only what you heard It’s always only what

Shortcuts 02:33
It’s no one’s fault if I fall And I just wanted to thank you all Standing here makes me look tall I’d have you on but you’re just too small These shortcuts are all that you know And they took you right down the road These shortcuts yeah you like to follow As long as you’re not the one left in the cold It’s an irreversible law Either these points are connected or they’re not Who would’ve thought that you’d go so far And I’m glad you didn’t have to wait a lot Cause these shortcuts are all that you know And they took you right down the road These shortcuts yeah you like to follow As long as you’re not the one left in the cold

Yeah they will all teach about right and wrong That when you act good it’s not for now, it’s for later Whatever you think you understand, not good enough So surrender now for the common good We’ve been here before, you can just let go You’re bound to be wrong if you ache for more, all you need is right here So come and get what you’re searching for, I tell you it’s been here all along If you rock the boat all you’ll do is drown And to the sky I can turn my gaze And I can see my reflection up there While the world’s dead set on going ablaze I keep searching for my reflection up there And if it’s weakness that I have to fear I am certain there is something else here Your disputes will drown in the sands of time Cause I can see my reflection is mine

Welling up while the branches do their swaying Layers add up till the pile comes crumbling This day is all there is Filing through, the memories are what’s happening End in sight with no doubt that it’s coming Now who d’you spend it with? Cause this day is all there is It’s alright I can hold on It’s alright yeah Silent forces always turn out stronger Don’t wake up they’ll show you who’s the master Well this day is all there is And I gave it what I received Death is pure and simple The way I see it The way I see myself I go on believing less and less until there’s nothing The way I see it No more lies beyond this now Filing through, only memories are what’s happening End in sight with no doubt that it’s coming Now who d’you spend it with? Cause this day is all there is It’s alright I can hold on It’s alright yeah Death is pure and simple The way I see it The way I see myself I go on believing less and less until there’s nothing The way I see it No more lies beyond this now My life laid out on the table What did I want from it? What does it say about myself I can ask if this is right or not and why I’d do it At times I can see it It takes no time to choose to quit

Why don’t you see if I care I get that fear leads nowhere But slipping back Shed it all now Turning around into circles Moving ahead for sure At long last, could happen People gather around There’s hope in the strength that you found And it’s turning out Shed it all now Turning around into circles Moving ahead for sure now At long last, could happen Save it for later, always Change is the scary part The wisdom of others, it’s everywhere Do what’s right, say what’s right, will take you there And of course it’s real Shed it all now Turning around into circles Moving ahead for sure now At long last, could happen Change is the scary part
11.
Or so / I figure From what / I’ve seen by now This whistle Blows silent noise And it just won’t ever get heard Are you / In here with me? These feelings don’t break down They build up We got it together though we’re alone Like hills on an island you can ignore I thought it would matter so I kept on Was it wrong? It’s all true, so yeah pile it on Two birds / Yeah one stone A second chance / If it comes along Now I said it once and I can say it once more All hope is lost And then you find more Disappointments never wore Cause sooner or later they just lock the door What you want isn’t what matters at all The stakes are high and this is nothing but small So now you can pile it on And hear the silence call I used to be one of you
12.
Won’t I try this again I just don’t see what else It’s so unfair my friends If only to avoid a mess Now or never Didn’t work this time around I once saw things straight There’s no use in things to regret Options seem to uncheck themselves Feeling weary won’t solve this yet I could stop right here There’s nobody standing in the way I can’t even work up the sadness Too crushed by the slowing down Does it matter if I’ve ever been here? It’s hardly the first time around Wide eyes a thing of the past I thought that they would never rest Slowly leaving it all behind I know what’s my second guess Yeah I could stop right here Cause there’s nobody standing in the way Well so long, farewell It’s supposed to end Was this part of the plan? Is not my concern That’s right things just aren’t what they used to I carry this weight through the years all along I know what this says about chances Naming something will make it real I can’t even work up the sadness Too crushed by the slowing down Does it matter if I’ve ever been here? It’s hardly the first time around
13.
Taking the road all the way and then some more Old tricks they get older still Whatever you’ve been told yeah it ends right here Too much is enough sometimes When it’s time for goodbyes I’ll be so far gone I don’t get what you get from staying I’m so tired it’s a wonder I ain’t paralyzed But hell I’m ready for whatever’s in store Every time they will sacrifice it all I’m taking it in my stride When there’s no silver lining you just go with the grey It’s all too much but I march right on I want to know what sits at the core I want to know what sits at the core And when you see what you see you’ll know Cause it’s right there at the core The others say things have run their course The others say things have run their course And that when you see what you see you’ll know Yeah things have run their course

about

The first (and last!) album by Social Square.

credits

released October 4, 2021

All songs written and performed by Social Square, which is Patrick Haour (vocals, guitars, computer) and Faez Politzer (real drum kit, electronic drum kit, percussions, theremin, backing vocals).
Additional backing vocals on Fairness in the System by Ben Auriel & Arnaud Clergue.

We don’t use a bass; low end is provided by a pitched down guitar played through a bass amp. The only real bass was played by Patrick on Shortcuts. Faez used an iron beam for percussion on The Scary Part. He also made field recordings during a storm in Creil, France, which we used at the end of Fairness Reprise (all sounds 100% real).

All other sounds (voice samples, synthesizers and other sounds) cooked up by us on our laptop.
The people whose voices can be heard throughout the album are:
• Laura Balance from Superchunk on Keeping Track of Numbers, speaking at a “Featured Session” conference at SXSW 2018.
• Jacques Derrida on My Reflection, speaking at the Toronto “Other Testaments” conference in 2002.
• Two financial traders on The Scary Part speaking on the BBC and at City University London respectively, in the early 2010s.
• Julia Kristeva on The Way I See It, interviewed on Radio Canada in 1987.
• A TV anchor from YTN Korean in 2020 on I Thought It Would Matter.
• Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault on Fairness Reprise, interviewed in 1995 and 1981 respectively.

Tracks 2, 6, 12 recorded and mixed in June 2019 by Ben Auriel & Arnaud Clergue at Bellagio Studios, Boulogne Billancourt, France.

Tracks 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 recorded and mixed throughout 2020 and early 2021 by Guillaume Sandret at Le Ventre de la Baleine, Pantin, France.
